The School Counseling Track in the Counselor Education Master of Education program at UCF prepares you to positively impact students, families and communities as a certified school counselor. Designed for certified educators with a bachelor’s degree in education who are seeking additional certification in school counseling, this CACREP-accredited program equips you with the knowledge, clinical skills and real-world experience needed to support students’ academic success, career and college readiness, and mental health and well-being. 

Through coursework and applied learning, you’ll develop a strong foundation in comprehensive school counseling program development, ethical and legal school counseling practices, evidence-based interventions counseling with children and adolescents, and strategies for promoting career and college readinessYou will also engage in courses that focus on counseling techniques and skills, group counseling, and multicultural competencies. 

Gain hands-on experience through supervised practicum and internship opportunities where you can apply what you’ve learned in real-world environments — including K-12 school settings — while receiving supervision and mentorship from onsite school supervisors and UCF faculty.  

By the time you graduate, you’ll be prepared to pursue state certification and launch career as a certified school counselorThrough advocacyleadership and collaboration, you’ll be equipped to support students’ academic successemotional wellness, and career development — ultimately helping each child reach their highest potential.

Course Overview

Career and College Readiness in Schools PK-12

Gain a developmental overview of child and adolescent career growth and exploration for children and adolescents. You'll also learn applicable interventions for career education and counseling, which can be used to assist students in identifying their strengths while mapping postsecondary pathways.

This course serves as comprehensive orientation to the roles and functions of counselors in K-12 schools. You will learn specific skills that optimize student outcomes through the design, coordination and execution of developmental comprehensive school counseling services.

This course explores counseling theories, processes, and techniques that can be implemented for children and adolescents.

Skills You'll Learn

  • Build a foundation in school counseling based on best practices, research, and lessons based on the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Student Standards.
  • Help students identify needs and challenges, set goals, apply strategies for bolstering academic achievement, and create postsecondary plans.
  • Support students鈥 mental health and well-being through short-term counseling and provide referrals for long-term support when needed.
  • Consult and collaborate with families and educational partners to advocate for student success.
  • Prepare for licensure in Florida and beyond.
