Trevor Colbourn, UCF\u2019s second president, led the charge to expand \u201cFlorida\u2019s space university\u201d from Florida Technological 海角直播 to the 海角直播.<\/p>\n

Trevor Colbourn was born February 24, 1927, in Armidale, New South Wales, Australia.<\/p>\n

Colbourn earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in history from the 海角直播 of London, a master\u2019s in history from the College of William and Mary in Virginia, and a Ph.D. in American history from the Johns Hopkins 海角直播 in Maryland.<\/p>\n

He went on to teach history at Penn State 海角直播 and Indiana 海角直播 Bloomington before moving into administration. He also served as the graduate dean at the 海角直播 of New Hampshire and academic vice president and eventually acting president at San Diego State 海角直播.<\/p>\n

In 1978, he became president of Florida Technological 海角直播, after founding president Charles Millican<\/a> retired.<\/p>\n

In addition to a high-profile name change, Colbourn also established UCF\u2019s honors program that would later become the Burnett Honors College<\/a> and a football program that has earned national rankings; nurtured a fledgling research park; established UCF\u2019s Institute for Simulation and Training; and developed a partnership with Orange County that created thousands of high tech jobs and helped transform the region\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n

Under his tenure, UCF also introduced the state\u2019s first stand-alone doctoral program in computer science<\/a>, followed by Ph.D. offerings in civil, computer, electrical, mechanical, industrial and environmental engineering<\/a>; business administration<\/a>; and human factors psychology<\/a>. UCF also expanded master\u2019s<\/a> and bachelor\u2019s programs<\/a>, dedicated new buildings at the Daytona Beach and Cocoa campuses and established Greek Park on the main campus.<\/p>\n

He oversaw enrollment growth from 11,000 to 18,000 students and an increase in research funding from $3.8 million to $16.4 million annually. The UCF Foundation\u2019s assets increased from almost $800,000 to more than $11 million.<\/p>\n

\u201cChange is what higher education is all about,\u201d Colbourn once said. \u201cThis institution has a distinguished past and will have a much more distinguished future. It\u2019s been a lot of fun, some anguish and certainly no regrets.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t\t
