His appointment, beginning January 2017, is in recognition of his contributions to adaptive human-systems engineering.

Adaptive human-systems use direct information from on-line brain physiological monitoring. The systems adjust and adapt their operations to improve unaided individuals鈥 ability. These systems are employed in many dimensions of everyday life and exert significant effects on the design of almost all computer-based technological innovations.

Hancock has applied adaptive human-systems engineering to military systems as well as other fields. Currently, Hancock and his graduate students are developing robotics for aiding physically disabled individuals.

IEEE Fellows, selected by the IEEE board of directors, must have an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest.

The selection process is highly competitive, with scholars selected worldwide. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement.

Hancock pioneered the use of physiological and neuro-physiologically based adaptive human-machine systems. These systems use information derived from brain and body to regulate interactions between users and their technologies.

These systems can be used to replace damaged capacities to interact, regulate on-going information exchange rate, and even augment and improve human physical and cognitive capacities.

Hancock was also awarded the Leland S. Kollmorgen Spirit of Innovation Award from the Augmented Cognition Society, for these foundational contributions.

Receiving his doctorate from the 海角直播 of Illinois, Hancock also worked at the 海角直播 of Southern California and the 海角直播 of Minnesota prior to moving to UCF. He is affiliated with multiple universities and institutions.

鈥淚 am extremely honored at being named Fellow in IEEE,鈥 Hancock said. 鈥淣ot only does it attest to the growing interdisciplinary nature of all of engineering, I feel it is also a direct recognition of the importance of human-centered engineered systems. So, while I am personally very gratified by this honor, my hope is that it is representative of a thrust that puts people at the heart of all of our modern, technical environments.鈥

The IEEE is the world鈥檚 leading professional association for advancing technology for humanity. Through its 400,000 plus members in 160 countries, the association is a leading authority on a wide variety of areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics.

鈥淒r. Hancock is one of our most distinguished scholars, a leading authority in human factors psychology,鈥 said Michael Johnson, dean of the College of Sciences. 鈥淭his recognition from IEEE adds to a long list of well-deserved honors.鈥

UCF Professors Honored For Contributions to Science, Engineering /news/national-group-honors-ucf-professors-for-contributions-to-science-engineering/ Sat, 01 Dec 2012 16:00:49 +0000 /news/?p=43728 The American Association for the Advancement of Science is honoring five 海角直播 professors with specialties in everything from archaeology to engineering for their significant contributions to their perspective fields.

鈥淭hese individuals have been elevated to this rank because of their efforts toward advancing science applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished,鈥 according to the AAAS.

UCF鈥檚 recipients are:

  • Arlen Frank Chase: For distinguished contributions to Maya archaeological data and theory, and to archaeological sciences, especially in remote sensing.
  • Louis C. Chow: For outstanding contributions in the areas of heat transfer in electro-optical, computing and power systems and two-phase spray cooling.
  • Suhada Jayasuriya: For outstanding contributions to the fields of robust control of nonlinear systems, quantitative feedback theory and multi-agent systems.
  • Zhihua Qu: For distinguished contributions to the field of nonlinear systems and control, particularly for control of networked systems with applications to robotics and energy systems.
  • Peter Adrian Hancock: For distinguished contributions to engineering psychology and human factors with respect to integrative theoretical modeling in the areas of attention, workload, stress and fatigue.
  • The UCF recipients said they were honored and humbled.

鈥淚t is gratifying to have your scientific contributions recognized by your peers,鈥 said Chase, the chair of the anthropology department. 鈥淔or Anthropology, this is one of the few truly聽national-level honors that is available to our discipline.鈥

Others said they were thrilled to see so many UCF faculty members honored.

鈥淚 am very proud and honored to be named a Fellow of AAAS and to join with colleagues from UCF who are sharing in this status,鈥 said Hancock a Pegasus professor of psychology with appointments to the Institute for Simulation & Training, the departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Industrial Engineering. 鈥淚 think it is a mark of the growing prestige of our institution that we have a 鈥榗lass鈥 of this size.鈥

A total of 702 fellows were named including 28 from Florida institutions. New Fellows will be presented with an official certificate and a gold and blue (representing science and engineering, respectively) rosette pin during the 2013 AAAS annual meeting in Boston on Feb. 16.

The tradition of AAAS Fellows began in 1874. Currently, members can be considered for the rank of Fellow if nominated by the steering group of their respective sections, by three Fellows, or by the association’s chief executive officer. Each steering group then reviews the nominations of individuals within its respective section and forwards a final list to the AAAS Council.

The AAAS Council votes on the final aggregate list.聽The council is the policymaking body of the association, chaired by the president, and consisting of the members of the board of directors, the retiring section chairs, delegates from each electorate and each regional division, and two delegates from the National Association of Academies of Science.
