Ahoy There! 'Dames At Sea' Cruises Onto UCF Stage /news/ahoy-there-dames-at-sea-cruises-onto-ucf-stage/ Thu, 18 Nov 2010 17:44:58 +0000 /news/?p=17932 UCF Conservatory Theatre’s latest offering cruises onto the Black Box stage this evening for the opening of “Dames At Sea.”

With book and lyrics by George Haimsohn and Robin Miller and music by Jim Wise, “Dames At Sea” is a musical comedy inspired by 1930s Hollywood director and choreographer Busby Berkeley.  “Dames At Sea” pays homage to “42nd Street,” complete with the theme of a young girl going to Broadway and making it big — plus an abundance of musical numbers, dancing and tapping.

The show opens Thursday, Nov. 18, and will run through Sunday, Dec. 5., on UCF’s main campus. All performances are scheduled in UCF’s smaller Black Box Theatre.

“It’s an intimate setting for an intimate musical,” says Earl Weaver, the show’s director and UCF’s coordinator of Musical Theatre.

Weaver adds that this “family-friendly, lighthearted romp” will not only be fun and entertaining, but it also will be eligible to participate in the well-revered American College Theatre Festival, or ACTF.

“We’ve never been able to have a full musical submitted for ACTF, so ‘Dames At Sea’ is the perfect opportunity to do so,” he said.

Performances of  “Dames At Sea” will be Thursdays through Sundays from Nov. 18 until Dec. 5.

All shows begin at 8 p.m., except for the Sunday matinee, which will start at 2 p.m.

Ticket prices are $17 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students with their ID. Reservations are recommended and available through the box office at 407-823-1500. Group rates are available. The box office can assist with accommodations for patrons with disabilities.

Spooky Vampire Story Just in Time for Halloween /news/spooky-vampire-story-just-in-time-for-halloween/ Thu, 21 Oct 2010 16:05:14 +0000 /news/?p=17042 This Halloween season, UCF Conservatory Theatre presents a thrilling production of “Dracula” by Hamilton Deane. This spooky performance opens Thursday, Oct. 21, and runs through Sunday, Oct. 31, on UCF’s main campus.

Based on the novel by Bram Stoker, “Dracula” tells the chilling story of a woman who becomes mysteriously anemic, and a Dr. Van Helsing who believes that a vampire is the cause. The play is a quest to confound the suspected foe Count Dracula and is full of supernatural shudders and surprises.

Theatre professor Donald Seay, who won a Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival directing award for last year’s UCF production of “Proof,” selected Deane’s version of “Dracula” to direct. “There have been so many TV and movie versions that were only loosely based on the novel,” he said. “This version is compact and encompasses most of the original story.”

Seay adds that his production will reveal the vampire’s plans, how they unfold and how the characters will stop him.

“Dracula” runs Thursday, Oct. 21, through Sunday, Oct. 24, and Thursday, Oct. 28, through Sunday, Oct. 31, in the Main Stage theatre. All shows begin at 8 p.m., except for Sunday matinees, which start at 2 p.m.

Ticket prices are $19 for adults, $17 for seniors and $12 for students with their IDs.

Reservations are recommended and available through the box office at 407-823-1500. Group rates are available. The box office can assist with accommodations for patrons with disabilities.

‘The Chimes’ Rings Out at UCF Conservatory Theatre /news/the-chimes-rings-out-at-ucf-conservatory-theatre/ Wed, 22 Sep 2010 14:07:20 +0000 /news/?p=15954 Since its debut at the Orlando Shakespeare Theatre’s PlayFest in early 2009, “The Chimes” has been called one of the area’s Top 20 can’t-miss cultural events this fall.

The play, written by Central Florida native Kevin Christopher Snipes, tells the story of four teenage boys at a New England boarding school on the eve of World War II. They are brought together by their love of Shakespeare and torn apart by the impending war.

“The Chimes” opens this week as a full-scale production with many of last year’s cast members. The play, in the Black Box Theatre on UCF’s Orlando campus, runs from Thursday, Sept. 23, through Sunday, Oct. 10.

“’The Chimes’ rings out to remind us that unless a stand is taken, ignorance and hatred can rule not only an institution of higher education, but an entire civilization,” said director David Lee, an assistant professor of Theatre at UCF.

The cast combines the talents of several UCF Theatre students with three professional actors: Mark Brotherton, a UCF Theatre faculty member, Bob Dolan and noted film actor Tom Nowicki. Please note that this show includes adult themes and brief nudity.

Performances of  “The Chimes” will be Thursdays through Saturdays from Sept. 23 until Oct. 9. A Sunday matinee performance will be Oct. 10.

All shows begin at 8 p.m., except for the Sunday matinee, which will start at 2 p.m.

Ticket prices are $17 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students with their ID. Reservations are recommended and available through the UCF Conservatory Theatre box office at 407-823-1500. Group rates are available. The box office can assist with accommodations for patrons with disabilities.

Cab & Cab Event Raises Thousands /news/cab-cab-event-raises-thousands/ Fri, 25 Jun 2010 19:15:21 +0000 /news/?p=14006 On May 1, over 225 guests attended the first annual Cabaret & Cabernet event which raised thousands of dollars for Rosen College.

The event was created by Rosen College of Hospitality Management students under the guidance of Professor Suzan Bunn and featured performing talents from students in UCF’s Conservatory Theatre and food preparation and presentation by students under the guidance of Chef Vivian Ray. The campus was transformed by a series of live cabaret performances from France, Australia and the United States, alongside delicious international food-and-wine.

Seniors in the Event Management II course were charged with the task of pulling together Rosen College’s only fundraiser this year within one semester.  Teams were delegated to plan, promote, seek sponsorships, develop décor, menus, handle staffing, selling tickets and more. The hard work paid off as the students gained once-in-a lifetime experience, while increasing exposure and support for Rosen College.

Class manager for the event, Kelsey Jobes stated “It’s really exciting that local employers know us because of this project and Rosen’s reputation. The fact that I get to oversee the whole operation is great because it allows me to work on my leadership and problem-solving skills that I’ll one-day be able to use and reference back to in my career.”

The food and wine portion of the event took place in and around the Rosen College courtyard, and the performances were housed in the Darden Auditorium, Disney Dining Room, Three Pillars Café and the Anheuser-Busch Beer and Wine Lab.

What did attendees have to say?

We enjoyed every minute we were there and are looking forward to the next one.”~ Laura P. Bennett, President, Bennett & Company, Inc.

The entertainment, food and wine were excellent, and the students involved should be commended on a very professional event.”~ Anthony D. Atkinson, PMP, Director of Operations, ֱ of Phoenix

“I tend to go to these types of events with a critical eye (it’s a hazard of the job) but this one I was thoroughly able to enjoy from the moment we walked in – I can’t think of anything that was missing.” ~ Debi Jones, Entertainment Special Events Manager

To be that successful for a first time event is unusual and it can only get better from there.  It was an unusual and memorable mix of mingling, dining and entertainment.”~Dave Lehman, President, CONVENTIONPLUS®

This was the very first UCF event I ever went to and I have to say it was very well done — very professional. It was a fun evening.”Mike Thomas, UCF Student
