{"id":104608,"date":"2019-11-18T11:26:21","date_gmt":"2019-11-18T16:26:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=104608"},"modified":"2025-06-17T14:41:26","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T18:41:26","slug":"ucf-takes-2nd-nationally-in-department-of-energys-cyberforce-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-takes-2nd-nationally-in-department-of-energys-cyberforce-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"UCF Takes 2nd Nationally in Department of Energy\u2019s CyberForce Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Competing against more than 100 of the top collegiate cybersecurity teams in the nation, UCF took 2nd place nationally in Saturday\u2019s fifth annual <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberforcecompetition.com\/\">CyberForce Competition<\/a> sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.<\/p>\n<p>UCF\u2019s Collegiate Cybersecurity Competition team, known as Hack@UCF, also took 1<sup>st<\/sup> place in its daylong DOE regional matchups at the Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago while the simultaneous national event was held at nine other sites around the country involving 105 teams. The 海角直播 of Maryland, Baltimore County, was declared the national champion.<\/p>\n<p>At Argonne, UCF defeated 23 other competitors including schools such as the 海角直播 of Illinois, Purdue 海角直播 and 海角直播 of Houston.<\/p>\n<p>UCF\u2019s team is comprised of six\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/college\/engineering-computer-science\/\">College of Engineering and Computer Science<\/a>\u00a0students:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/msdf.ucf.edu\/\">digital forensics\u00a0<\/a>graduate students\u00a0and <strong>Austin Sturm \u201918 <\/strong>and<strong> Michael Roberts \u201919 <\/strong>;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/computer-science-bs\/\">computer science major<\/a>s\u00a0Andrew Hughes and Alexander Cote; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/college\/engineering-computer-science\/\">computer engineering<\/a> major David Maria, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/information-technology-bs\/\">information technology<\/a> major Martin Roberts. Their coach is Tom Nedorost, associate instructor of computer science.<\/p>\n<p>All the team members also belong to the Collegiate Cyber Defense Club @ UCF, which was formed in 2012 and started competing nationally in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Hack@UCF won <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/three-peat-ucfs-cyberdefense-team-win-3rd-straight-national-championship\/\">three back-to-back championships<\/a> in the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and also won 1<sup>st<\/sup> in the Department of Energy CyberForce Competition last year.<\/p>\n<p>Nederost said the team has competed the past three years at Argonne, the host of the tournament, and likes to go head-to-head with other universities there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe get to meet teams from many midwestern schools that we don\u2019t typically compete against in other competitions,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The DOE tournament focuses on the defensive and hardening nature of energy infrastructures. Participating teams competed against each to build networks that can withstand attacks to steal data, deface websites and wipe out critical systems from professionally executed cyberattacks.
