{"id":114222,"date":"2020-10-07T12:36:26","date_gmt":"2020-10-07T16:36:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=114222"},"modified":"2020-10-21T15:41:19","modified_gmt":"2020-10-21T19:41:19","slug":"ucf-create-launches-lead-like-a-girl-courses-in-honor-of-international-day-of-the-girl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-create-launches-lead-like-a-girl-courses-in-honor-of-international-day-of-the-girl\/","title":{"rendered":"UCF CREATE Launches \u2018Lead\u2026 Like a Girl\u2019 Courses In Honor of International Day of the Girl"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Established by the United Nations and first celebrated in 2012, International Day of the Girl (Oct. 11) promotes the empowerment of young girls around the world, while also advocating for the attainment of their basic human rights, like education and bodily autonomy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdolescent girls have the right to a safe, educated, and healthy life, not only during these critical formative years, but also as they mature into women,\u201d according to the U.N. website. \u201cIf effectively supported during the adolescent years, girls have the potential to change the world \u2014 both as the empowered girls of today and as tomorrow\u2019s workers, mothers, entrepreneurs, mentors, household heads, and political leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To help nurture and empower girls year-round, UCF\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/create.cah.ucf.edu\/\">Center for Research and Education in Arts, Technology and Entertainment (CREATE)<\/a> founded the <a href=\"https:\/\/create.cah.ucf.edu\/initiatives\/lead-like-a-girl\/\">\u201cLead\u2026Like a Girl\u201d initiative<\/a>. In the program, young women who are 16-24 \u00a0are provided free online classes in budgeting, leadership, resume writing, interviewing, and other necessary life and career-building skills. <a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.instructure.com\/enroll\/FT777P\">Students can self-enroll online for the program here. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll girls should have the opportunity to prepare for their futures,\u201d says Tracey Morrison, project manager and assistant to the director of CREATE. \u201cWhether it\u2019s to further their education or begin a career, we believe in empowering young women to reach their highest potential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In celebration of International Day of the Girl, CREATE\u2019s LLG program also asked women within and connected to the Central Florida community to share stories of strength to encourage and inspire girls who are following in their footsteps.
