{"id":16679,"date":"2010-10-08T08:59:59","date_gmt":"2010-10-08T12:59:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=16679"},"modified":"2018-06-27T15:19:55","modified_gmt":"2018-06-27T19:19:55","slug":"water-discovered-on-second-asteroid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/water-discovered-on-second-asteroid\/","title":{"rendered":"Water Discovered on Second Asteroid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two teams of researchers who made national headlines in April for showing the first evidence of water ice and organic molecules on an asteroid have now discovered that asteroid 65 Cybele contains the same material.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis discovery suggests that this region of our solar system contains more water ice than anticipated,\u201d said 海角直播 Professor Humberto Campins. \u201cAnd it supports the theory that asteroids may have hit Earth and brought our planet its water and the building blocks for life to form and evolve here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Campins will present the teams\u2019 findings during the <a href=\"https:\/\/dps.aas.org\/meetings\/future\">42nd-annual Division of Planetary Sciences Conference<\/a> in Pasadena, Calif., which concludes Oct. 8.<\/p>\n<p>Asteroid 65 Cybele is somewhat larger than asteroid 24 Themis \u2013 the subject of the teams\u2019 first paper. Cybele has a diameter of 290 km (180 miles). Themis has a diameter of 200 km (124 miles). Both are in the same region of the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.<\/p>\n<p>The academic article reporting this new finding has been accepted for publication in the European Journal \u201cAstronomy and Astrophysics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Co-authors of the paper are Zoe Landsman and Kelly Hasgrove of the UCF;\u00a0 Javier Licandro of Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias, Spain, Michael S. Kelley of Department of Astronomy, 海角直播 of Maryland, Noemi Pinilla-Alonso and Dale Cruikshank of the NASA Ames Research Center; Andrew S. Rivkin of Johns Hopkins 海角直播 Applied Physics Laboratory and Joshua Emery of the Earth and Planetary Science Department, 海角直播 of Tennessee.<\/p>\n<p>Campins is an expert on asteroids and comets. He received national attention for an article published in Nature showing the first evidence of water ice and organic molecules on asteroid 24 Themis.\u00a0 He\u2019s also worked on several science missions with NASA and the European Space Agency.<\/p>\n<p>Campins holds degrees from the 海角直播 of Kansas and the 海角直播 of Arizona.
