{"id":34525,"date":"2012-04-02T11:04:08","date_gmt":"2012-04-02T15:04:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=34525"},"modified":"2022-07-29T14:46:59","modified_gmt":"2022-07-29T18:46:59","slug":"paying-it-forward-from-orlando-to-luanda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/paying-it-forward-from-orlando-to-luanda\/","title":{"rendered":"Paying it Forward from Orlando to Luanda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sara Marti\u2019s path towards a degree in Interpersonal Communications (\u201905) took a life-altering turn when she\u00a0accepted an internship at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>She was inspired by the officers she shadowed there and she brought back\u00a0an expanded skill set\u00a0to UCF. These skills soon\u00a0came in\u00a0handy as a resident assistant managing campus shelters\u00a0during the\u00a02004 hurricane season.<\/p>\n<p>Sara&#8217;s\u00a0RA experience on the heels of her internship created an <em>a-ha moment<\/em>: She realized her strengths and interests perfectly matched\u00a0the job of\u00a0\u00a0Foreign Service Officer, a diplomat who serves U.S. citizens abroad.<\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0soon\u00a0won a Rangel Fellowship with the Department of State, which covered her master\u2019s degree, an internship with Congress, an additional Foreign Service internship and her commissioning as a Foreign Service Officer in 2008. Since that time she has served in Luanda, Angola; Brasilia, Brazil; and London, United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>Sara feels fortunate to work in such an important field and has created a scholarship to support students who wish to study abroad or pursue a career in international relations.\u00a0 She wants to help\u00a0others make a difference in a world where international relations are increasingly difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFocusing a scholarship in international relations within The Burnett Honors College is the best way that I can contribute to the educational experience of young, smart,
