{"id":94512,"date":"2019-02-21T13:31:39","date_gmt":"2019-02-21T18:31:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=94512"},"modified":"2025-06-17T14:40:22","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T18:40:22","slug":"ucf-board-trustees-accepts-president-whittakers-resignation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-board-trustees-accepts-president-whittakers-resignation\/","title":{"rendered":"UCF Board of Trustees Accepts President Whittaker\u2019s Resignation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UCF\u2019s Board of Trustees accepted the resignation of President Dale Whittaker at an emergency meeting Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p>The Board also appointed Vice President Thad Seymour, Jr. as interim president effective immediately, and voted to engage the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges to assist with a search for an interim president until a permanent replacement is appointed.<\/p>\n<p>Whittaker, UCF\u2019s fifth president, offered his resignation on Tuesday, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/my-leadership-choice\/\">a statement to the campus community<\/a>. He also sent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/leadership\/president\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/02\/DW-Letter-to-BOT.pdf\">a letter to trustees<\/a> that laid out a path to a renewed relationship with the Legislature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlorida needs a UCF that serves our students and community without fear of what the future may bring,\u201d Whittaker wrote. \u201cGreat universities and our state depend on trust and transparency with a Legislature that shares in its values and mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Board\u2019s acceptance of the resignation is subject to a settlement agreement with President Whittaker that will be determined in the weeks ahead. The agreement will be negotiated by the Chairman and based on recommendations from the Board\u2019s Nominating and Governance Committee.<\/p>\n<p>The Board\u2019s action followed more than 90 minutes of public comments.<\/p>\n<p>Board Chairman Robert Garvy praised Whittaker\u2019s character and integrity, and his effort to correct the problems that led to the misspending of funds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNevertheless, President Whittaker stated in his offer to resign his presidency that sometimes the finest leadership decisions are those that entrust future leadership to others. He has concluded that for UCF to heal wounds new leadership is required. Our loss will be some other institution\u2019s great gain,\u201d Garvy said. \u201cDale Whittaker has demonstrated great courage and sacrifice for the students, faculty and administration at UCF. I believe we should honor his thoughtful and thoroughly considered offer to resign in the hope that the relationship between UCF and the Florida Legislature can be renewed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other trustees also praised Whittaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDale Whittaker is a great leader,\u201d Trustee <strong>Alex Martins\u00a0\u201901MA<\/strong> said. \u201cHe is a leader of high character, integrity, a visionary, and as we\u2019ve heard, incredibly innovative. We\u2019ve been very fortunate to have him as president of this university. Above being a great leader, he understands it\u2019s about this great institution and not about Dale Whittaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three trustees\u00a0\u2014 trustee John Sprouls, faculty representative William Self and student representative and SGA President Josh Bolo\u00f1a \u2014 voted to reject the resignation.<\/p>\n<p>Seymour, vice president for partnerships and chief innovation officer, joined UCF in Fall 2015 to help lead the university\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/strategic-plan\/\">Collective Impact Strategic Planning<\/a> process. He was then appointed vice provost for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/downtown\/\">UCF Downtown<\/a>, a campus that will open in August.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to coming to UCF, Seymour led strategic planning and business development for Lake Nona Medical City as senior vice president at Tavistock Development Company. He holds a bachelor\u2019s degree from Dartmouth College, a master\u2019s and doctorate from the 海角直播 of Wisconsin, and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern 海角直播.<\/p>\n<p>Seymour\u2019s service as interim president will conclude when a long-term interim president takes office.
